The second tier of Turkish football has gone through a variety of formats and name changes, most recently the Türk Telekom Lig A. For the 2007-08 season the title sponsor has been dropped from the name and is changed from Lig A to 1. Lig. The 18 clubs play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 34 games. The top two clubs are automatically promoted. The 3rd-6th clubs go into a playoff for a third promotion place. The bottom three clubs are relegated. The season runs from August to May with a six week winter break.
