The 2nd tier of Italian football is known as Serie B TIM, named after the title sponsor Italian mobile phone company TIM. The 22 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 42 games. The top two teams are automatically promoted. The 3rd place team is promoted if the difference between 3rd and 4th place is more than 9 points. If it isn't there is a playoff between the two teams. The bottom three teams are automatically relegated. The 19th team is relegated if the difference between 18th and 19th is less than six points. The season runs from September to June.
