The second tier of Spanish football is officially known as the Liga BBVA after the title sponsor BBVA, a Spanish bank. It is technically part of the Liga de Fútbol Profesional which incorporates the top two divisions of Spanish football. The 22 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 42 games. The top three clubs are promoted and the bottom four relegated. The season runs from August to June.
