The full name includes the title sponsor, Clydesdale Bank. In 1998 The 10 clubs in the Premier Division of the Scottish Football League broke away to form the Scottish Premier League. Several years later the league was expanded to 12 clubs. The clubs play each other three times (two home and one away) for a total of 33 games. The clubs are then split into a top six and bottom six and play a further five games against the other clubs in their group. The bottom club is relegated. The season runs from August to May.
