The Regionalliga West (West Regional League) is one of three fourth-tier leagues in the German football pyramid, along with the Regionalliga Nord and Regionalliga Süd. It was created for the 2008-09 season after the creation of the new third-tier league, the 3. Liga. The regionalliga became the fourth tier and was expanded to three separate groups. It is the top level of amateur football in Germany and can include B teams from clubs in the first three levels of the German game. The clubs of the Regionalliga West are drawn from the German states of Nordrhein-Westfalen, Saarland and Rheinland-Pfalz.

The 18 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 34 games. The season runs from July to May with a six-month winter break. The champions are promoted to the 3. Liga while the bottom three teams are relegated to the fifth-tier Oberliga.
