The Regionalliga Nord (North Regional League) is one of three fourth-tier leagues in German football, along with the Regionalliga Süd and Regionalliga West. Until the 2008-09 season the Regionalliga level had been the third tier of the pyramid. That space is now occupied by the newly-created 3. Liga. It is the top level of amateur football in Germany and can contain B teams from the 1st-3rd levels of the game. The 18 clubs play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 34 games. The season runs from August to May with a one month winter break. The champions are promoted to the 3. Liga while the bottom four clubs are relegated to the fifth-tier Oberliga.
