There are two tournaments per season in the Primera División - the Torneo Apertura (August-December) and the Torneo Clausura (January-May). The 18 clubs play each other once per torneo, with the club that is home in the Apertura away in the Clausura. The clubs are divided into three groups of six. The top two teams from each group qualify for the playoffs as well as the next four teams in the overall table. The playoffs are all two leg, home and away series. There is no overall champion, therefore two trophies are awarded per season. Relegation is based on the average points obtained over the last three seasons. The bottom club in the relegation table is relegated.
