There are two tournaments per season in the Primera División A - the Torneo Apertura (August-December) and the Torneo Clausura (January-May). The 24 teams play each other once per torneo, with the club that is home in the Apertura away in the Clausura. The 24 teams are divided into two groups of 12. During each Torneo, each clubs plays every other club in its group as well has half the clubs from the other group for a total of 17 games. The top four clubs from each group qualify for the playoffs. The winners of the two torneos go into a playoff for the overall season championship and promotion to the Primera División. Relegation is based on the average points obtained over the last three seasons. The bottom club in the relegation table is relegated.
