The league is officially known as the ABSA Premier Soccer League, after the title sponsor ABSA, a large South African bank. The 16 clubs play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 30 games. The bottom club are automatically relegated. The 15th club goes into a promotion/relegation playoff with the 2nd-4th teams from the First Division. The season runs from August to May.
