Professional football in the Republic of Ireland is now organized by the FAI after 85 years as an autonomous league. The official name includes that of title sponsor eircom, an Irish mobile phone company. The 12 clubs play each other three times (two home and one away) for a total of 33 games. The bottom 3 clubs are relegated while the 1st team from the First Division is promoted. The league will be reduced to 10 clubs for the 2009 season. The season runs from March to November.
