Professional football in the Republic of Ireland is now organized by the FAI after 85 years as an autonomous league. The official name includes that of title sponsor eircom, an Irish mobile phone company. The 10 clubs play each other four times (two home and two away) for a total of 36 games. The champion is automatically promoted. The next two teams play off and the winner of that match enters a promotion/relegation playoff with the 11th team from the Premier Division. There is no relegation. The season runs from March to November.
