The official name of the league (Carnegie Premier League) includes the title sponsor Carnegie College, part of the Leeds Polytechnic system. The 16 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 30 games. The bottom club is automatically relegated. The 15th club goes into a promotion/relegation playoff with the second team from the First Division. The season runs from September to May.

Football in Northern Ireland will be reorganized for the 2008-09 season, with the creation of an IFA Premiership of 12 teams. The teams will be chosen on a variety of criteria, not simply the 12 best teams from the 2007-08 season. Relegation is unclear at this point.
