The 12 clubs play each other three times each, two home and one away, for a total of 33 games. The champion is promoted, while the 2nd team goes into a playoff with the 15th team from the Irish Premier League.  The bottom two clubs are relegated to the Irish Second Division. The season runs from August to May.

Football in Northern Ireland will be reorganized for the 2008-09 season with the creation of a 12-team IFA Premiership. It has not yet been announced what will happen to the First and Second Division.
