Created in the 1958-59 season by the merger of the previously separate Third Division North and Third Division South. After the formation of the breakaway Premier League in 1992 the name was changed to the Football League Third Division. It was renamed again before the 2004-05 season to Football League Two. Whatever the name it is the fourth and lowest tier of professional football in England.
