Formed for the 1920-21 season after the Football League absorbed a large number of teams from the semi-pro Southern League. A year later a similar number of teams from the North of England joined and two separate third divisions were created - North and South. The two were merged for the 1958-59 season to create a nationwide Third Division and Fourth Division. After the creation of the breakway Premier League in 1992 the Third Division was renamed the Second Division and before the 2004-05 season it changed name again to Football League One. Whatever the name it is the third tier of professional football in England.
