The league is officially known as the Jupiler League after title sponsor Jupiler, a beer made by InBev. This is not  to be confused with the top-tier league in Belgium, also known as the Jupiler League. Eerste Divisie translates as First Division. The 20 clubs play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 38 games. The champion is automatically promoted. The season is divided into four stages of 8 games each. The winner of each stage as well as the next two teams in the overall table go into a promotion/relegation playoff with the 16th and 17th team from the Eredivisie. There is no relegation from the Eerste Divisie. The season runs from August to May with a one month winter break.
