The league name (Campeonato Brasileiro Série C) translates as the C Series of the Brazilian Championship, the third level in the Brazilian system. Série C consists of three preliminary phases, each of which have the same format - groups of 4 who play each other twice (home and away) and the top two teams advance to the next round. The initial 64 teams are narrowed down to eight. The final eight play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 14 games and the top four teams are promoted to Série B. There is no relegation. The clubs qualify based on performance in state competitions, as well as the four clubs relegated from the previous season's Série B.
