The Belgian Second Division is known as D2 in the French-speaking and the Tweede Klasse in the Dutch-speaking parts of the country. The 18 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 34 games. The bottom two clubs are automatically relegated. The 16th club goes into a promotion/relegation playoff with six teams from the Third Division. The champion is promoted. The season is divided into three stages of 10, 12 and 12 matches. The winners of each stage go into a promotion/relegation playoff with the 17th team from the First Division. The 4 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 6 games. The winner will play in the First Division the following season, the rest in the Second Division. The season runs from July to May with a one month winter break.
