The league is normally known as the Jupiler League after title sponsor Jupiler, a brand of beer brewed by Inbev. It's not to be confused with the similarly-named Dutch Second Division. The 18 clubs play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 34 games. The bottom team is automatically relegated. The 17th team goes into a promotion/relegation playoff with three teams from the Second Division. The 4 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 6 games. The winner will play in the First Division the following season, the rest in the Second Division. The season runs from August to May with a one month winter break.
