Euro 2008 Qualifying Campaign

Austria and Switzerland qualified automatically as hosts. The remaining UEFA countries were divided into 7 groups of 7 or 8 teams and the top 2 from each group qualified. A few of the more interesting storylines: England's failure to qualify, the great runs of Scotland (beat France home and away), Northern Ireland (beat Spain, Sweden and Denmark but lost twice to Iceland once to Latvia), Finland (if I'm not mistaken, the closest they've ever come to qualifying), a first competitive win in years for Malta, the miserable San Marino (0-13 at home to Germany) and the crazy Denmark-Sweden game.

Overall top scorer in qualifying was Northern Ireland's David Healy, with 13. Next was Croatia's Eduaro da Silva (10) and Poland's Euzebiusz Smolarek (9).
