Steaua were the first club from Eastern Europe to win the European Cup/Champions League. Romanian football suffered a downtown in the immediate post-Communist era but has been on the rise in recent years. Steaua reached the semifinals of last season's UEFA Cup after seeing off Bucharest's third club Rapid in the quarterfinals. The national team's heyday came during the 1990s, led by the country's greatest-ever player Gheorge Hagi.
