Description:
England is the birthplace of the game - the first national association, the first national cup, the first national league and involved in the first international match (0-0 v Scotland). The FA Cup, the first real competitive tournament of any kind, began in 1871. The Football League was launched in 1888. There is also a secondary cup competition, the Carling Cup, contested by all members of the top four (professional) tiers of English football. The Premier League is widely regarded as the most popular of all the world's football leagues. Despite this status, the England has consistently disappointed on the big stage, with only one World Cup trophy in its possession.
