Description:
Most teams in Bulgaria are part of multi-sport clubs, or at least share a name (and fan base) with teams playing other sports. During the Communist era (late 1940s to late 1980s)many clubs in Bulgaria went through a bewildering series of politically-inspired name changes and temporary mergers. Some teams have had as many as seventeen different names in their history. Since the arrival of CSKA on the scene in the late 40s, Bulgarian football has been dominated by their rivalry with Levski. Bulgaria had two cup competitions from 1981-90, the Soviet Army Cup and the Bulgarian Cup. The Bulgarian Cup was the most important from 1982 on. The Bulgarian national team came completely out of nowhere to have a sensational run in the 1994 World Cup but have largely disappointed before and since.
