Description: Wigan Athletic were formed at a public meeting at the Queen's Hall in May 1932. They emerged from the ashes of Wigan Borough, who resigned from the Football League in 1931. Their league history is as follows: Cheshire County League (1932-47), Lancashire Combination (1947-60), Cheshire County League (1960-67), Northern Premier League (1967-78). In 1978 Wigan Athletic joined the Football League. Latics is a corruption of Athletic. The club's emblem is based on that of the city of Wigan. The stadium is named for JJB, an athletics apparel company based in Wigan, the club sponsor and the company of the club's owner Dave Whelan. After many years of non-league and lower division football his investment in the club has pushed them into the Premier League, a major achievement for a club from a rugby hotbed. Previous stadium - Springfield Park (1932-99).
