In 1934, some players left the club and formed Westerlo Sport. In 1942, the two groups were reunited as VC Westerlo. Koninklijke (Royal) is an honorary title given by the Belgian royal family to every club in Belgium after twenty-five years of existence. The city of Westerlo is located in a region of Belgium known as De Kempen (a sandy area), thus the Kempeneers nickname. The stadium's name Het Kuipje (The Small Tank) is a reference to Feyenoord's stadium De Kuip (The Tank). Matricule# 2024.
