The club was formed by a group of students and given the name Hellas at the suggestion of a professor. Hellas is the Greek word for Greece. Hellas merged with Verona in 1919 and adopted the name Hellas Verona. Another merger took place in 1929, this time with Bentegodi and Scaligera, resulting in a name change to AC Verona. Another merger in 1959 (this time with another local club named Hellas) resulted in a name change to Hellas Verona AC. Two further financial restructurings in the 1990s resulted in further minor name changes. The club's colors of yellow and blue are the colors of the city of Verona. The club's emblem includes that of the city of Verona, the tricolor of the Italian flag and the coat of arms of the Scala family. The Scalas were rulers of the city during the 13th and 14th centuries. Their coat of arms includes a pair of mastiffs, another typical nickname for the city's inhabitants (and the club). The Scaligeri nickname has similar origins in the Scala family. The derby with Chievo is known as the Derby Della Scala. The stadium is named for a 19th century benefactor of sport in the city.
