The club was founded by a group of young boys in Saint-Gilles, one of the working-class districts of Brussels. Ever since, Saint-Gilles and "La Marolle" (the heart of the city) are where old unionistes families come from. Royal is an honorary title given by the Belgian royal family to every club in Belgium after twenty-five years of existence. Union Saint-Gilloise was beyond argument the most successful Belgian team until World War II. The legendary rivalry with Daring in the Brussels derby is still remembered, as well as the Union team from the '30s that established the Belgian record of 60 undefeated matches. The Apaches nickname is a reference to a turn-of-the century Parisian street gang. The Gars de la Butte is a reference to the Butte, a hill next to the stadium. The stadium is named for a former club president, the man behind its construction and the architect of the legendary Union team of the 1930s. It is located on the edge of Brussels' Parc Duden.
