They are typically referred to as San Martín (Tucumán) or San Martín de Tucumán to distinguish them from other clubs known as San Martín such as San Martín (San Juan). The name San Martín comes from José de San Martín, a major figure in Argentine history, in particular the movement to gain independence from Spain. The club's red and white colors were taken in honor of the red and white clad Grenadiers that San Martín led during the fighting. Las Cirujas have won a remarkable three promotions in four seasons, climbing from the fourth-tier Torneo Argentino B to reach the Primera División for the 2008-09 season. This will be only their third season in the Primera. San Martín (Tucumán) play at the stadium known as La Ciudadela, located in the neighborhood of the same name. A project is in place to expand it to a capacity of 35, 000. Previous Stadiums: Gimnasio Saenz Peña (1916-), Gimnasio del Sport (-1925).
