Formed on April 1, 1908 with many of its original founders being boys of the 'Forzosos de Almagro' street gang. Padre Lorenzo Massa gave the boys a formal place to play and organized the club. The boys wanted to name the club after him, but the closest he would allow is for it to be named after the martyr San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence). Almagro is a neighborhood of Buenos Aires, though the club is truly based in the Boedo neighborhood. The club's colors symbolize fight (red) and idealism (blue). Its current stadium is a replacement for its long-time home, the Gasómetro (gas plant). It was given this nickname due to its visual similarity to many gas plants of the era, though no actual gas plant was located there. It is offically named for a former club president. The ciclón nickname was given to the club by journalist Hugo Marini in 1932, referring to them as "el ciclón de Boedo". Considered one of the big five of Argentine soccer. The cuervos nickname is a reference to the crow's black color, which was also the color the robes of Padre Lorenzo.
