Samsunspor was founded in 1965 by the combination of 4 amateur teams from Samsun - 19 Mayıs, FenerGençlik, Akınspor and Samsunspor. The stadium name translates as May 19th Stadium. May 19th is a historic date in Turkish history, being the day that Kemal Atatürk landed in Samsun to begin the Turkish national movement.
