Official Website: pumasunam.com.mx The club takes its nickname from the American football team also run by the university, whose origins date back to the 1920s. An early coach would regularly tell those players to play 'like pumas'. That team based its colors on the University of Notre Dame in the United States, several of whose coaches taught the sport to UNAM students. The football Pumas (and other UNAM sports teams) adopted the same colors when they were formed. Although the offical foundation date is 1954, an UNAM team had been playing in amateur tournaments for many years.
