Portuguesa means Portuguese in the Portuguese language. Portuguesa were formed on August 14, 1920 by the merger of five small clubs from the São Paulo Portuguese community - Lusíadas Futebol Club, Portugal Marinhense, Associação Cinco de Outubro, Associação Atlética Marquês de Pombal and Esporte Club Lusitano. In 1940 the name changed from Esportes to Desportes, a linguistic distinction that is way over my head.

The club colors of red and green are those of the Portuguese flag. The club's emblem includes the cross of Avis. This was used by the House of Avis, the royal family of Portugal from the 14th to 16th centuries. The order began after Portuguese victory over Castilian forces at the Battle of Aljubarrota on August 14th, 1385 and August 14th is (by no accident) the club's birthday. The club's nickname Lusa references their Portuguese heritage.

The club were two-time winners of the Torneo Rio-São Paulo, a tournament contested before the advent of a Brazilian national championship. Apart from that their best results are a pair of São Paulo state championships and a 2nd place finish in the 1996 Série A.

Portuguesa play in the Estádio do Canindé, located in the Canindé neighborhood of São Paulo. Previous stadiums - Cambuci (1922-29), São Bento (1929-56).
