Founded as a students' club, Politehnica being the Romanian equivalent of a Technical School (Polytechnic). The earlier name Ştiinţa means knowledge. The stadium is named for a former player. The club's official name is a reflection of a legal dispute with the previous owner Claudio Zambon. In 2001 he moved the club to Bucharest. At the same time Rocar Bucureşti moved to Timişoara and was adopted by former Poli supporters as their own. It was known as Politehnica AEK Timişoara for several years but now uses the current name as a legal dispute is being worked out with Zambon.
