Originally founded by English expatriates as Anglo Panormitan Athletic and Football Club, Panormitan meaning 'from Palermo'. It was formed for the pursuit of football, cricket, lawn tennis and other typically English sports. Everything but football was quickly dropped and the name was changed to Palermo FBC in 1907, the same year they acquired their present colors of pink and black. The team went bankrupt in 1939, then reformed in 1946. Went bankrupt again in 1986, then reformed in the present incarnation. The nickname Aquile - Eagles - is a reference to the club's emblem, where it is featured. The same eagle also appears in the coat of arms of the city of Palermo. Matches with arch-rival Catania are known as the Derby di Sicilia. The stadium was originally known as Stadio Littorale, a name with heavy Fascist overtones. It was changed to the Stadio Michele Marrone in 1936 to honor a Fascist hero of the Spanish Civil War. After the end of the Second World War (and the overthrow of the Fascists), the name was changed to La Favorita - the estate of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies where the stadium was built.
