Official Website: nufc.co.uk Description: Founded in November 1881 by members of the Stanley Cricket Club. Changed their name to East End in 1882 to avoid confusion with two other local clubs named Stanley. That same year they merged with Rosewood FC. The club's early rivals were West End. When Newcastle West End disappeared in 1892, Newcastle East End changed its name to Newcastle United and moved into West End's old stadium - St. James' Park. After spending four years in the Northern League the club joined the Football League for the 1893-94 season. According to the official website "another legend that has been handed down over the years is the story of a pair of magpies nesting in the old Victorian Stand at St. James' Park. It was said that United’s players of the time became so attached to the two birds that they picked their distinctive colours of black and white and named themselves the Magpies". The club's emblem is modeled upon that of the city of Newcastle, and also includes the club's black and white colors at its center. A Geordie is a resident of the general Newcastle are. The toon nickname reflects the local pronunciation of town. The St. James' Park was originally a Newcastle public park, which gradually evolved into a formal stadium. Previous stadiums - South Byker (1891-86), Chillingham Road (1886-92).
