Description: The New England Revolution takes its name from the northeastern region of the United States, which is known as New England – Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Previous teams from this area have used the New England name as well as the NFL New England Patriots. The principal city in the region is Boston although the New England Revolution's stadium is actually located in Foxborough, MA, about halfway between Boston and Providence, RI. The Revolution name is a reference to the American Revolution/War for Independence, which began in this part of the country. The name also hints at a double meaning with reference to a "soccer revolution" as the team logo consists of a soccer ball imposed on a mock American flag. The team is widely referred to as "The Revs" by both supporters and the area press. The team had little on-field success until the arrival of Liverpool FC legend Steve Nicol as manager. Since he took the helm, the team has been to every Eastern Conference championship game (MLS's post-season semifinal game), winning four out of six. Although the team has been a mainstay as one of the league's elite teams during the Nicol era, they have failed to win MLS Cup, widely considered to be the top trophy in American soccer. The New England Revolution are owned by Robert Kraft, owner of the NFL New England Patriots and the Gillette Stadium (previously named CMGI Field) which the two teams share. Previous Stadium: Foxboro Stadium (1996-2002).
