Official Website: mfc.co.uk Description: Middlesbrough Football and Athletic Club was founded by members of the Middlesbrough Cricket Club during a February 1876 meeting at the Talbot Hotel. They were looking for another sport to play during the winter to keep themselves fit. Boro were 1889 founder members of the Northern League, where they stayed for ten years before joining the Football League in 1899. Middlesbrough's highest-ever league finish was third in 1913-14. They surprisingly reached the UEFA Cup final in 2006, just two years after winning their only major trophy, the 2004 League Cup. The club's emblem includes a lion rampant, which is also in the city of Middlesbrough's coat of arms. The year 1986 on the emblem is the year the club was reformed after bankruptcy and the year they officially adopted the new name of Middlesbrough FC. The Riverside Stadium was given its name after a public vote by club supporters. The river in question is the Tees, which flows through the city of Middlesbrough. Previous stadiums - Old Archery Ground (1877-79), Breckon Hill (1879-82), Linthorpe Road (1882-1903), Ayresome Park (1903-95).
