Official Website: manutd.com Description: Formed as Newton Heath (L&YR) FC - the works team of Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath, a neighborhood of East Manchester. In 1880 the club became independent of the railway and changed their name to reflect that. In 1893 the club moved out of Newton Heath to play at the Bank Street ground in the neighboring district of Clayton. Newton Heath started competitive life in the Football Alliance in 1889 before joining the Football League three years later. A new owner took control in 1902, and he prompted the name change to Manchester United as an attempt to carve out a larger fan base. In 1910 they moved to Old Trafford on the south side of the city. Manchester United are the most popular club in the country. The 1958 Munich air disaster is a tragic and defining moment in the club's history, in which 8 players were killed in a plane crash. Won the treble of League, Cup and Champions League in the 1998-99, so far the only English club to have done this. The Red Devils nickname actually goes back to the Manchester rugby club Salford, who were given the nickname Les Diables Rouges (The Red Devils) during an unbeaten 1934 tour of France. It was later adopted by supporters of Manchester United for their own similarly colored club. The club's emblem includes a Red Devil and the ship found in the city of Manchester coat of arms. The stadium is near the Old Trafford cricket ground, Trafford being a neighborhood of Manchester. Played for eight seasons at Manchester City's Maine Road stadium because of war damage to Old Trafford. Previous stadiums - North Road, Monsall Road (1880-93), Bank Street (1893-1910), Old Trafford (1910-41) Maine Road (1941-49).
