The 'Sang et Or' nickname comes from club's colors. Considered a 'regional club', the stadium capacity is larger than the population of the city of Lens. The red and yellow colors are taken from the Spanish flag - by chance several club members were walking by the ruins of the Saint-Léger church, which was the last remnant of the 17th century Spanish occupation of Lens. Reached the UEFA Cup semifinals in 2000. The stadium is named for a former director of a local mining company.
