Named in honor of Internazionale of Milan, rendered into the Portuguese 'Internacional'. The founders of the club initially attempted to join on of the already-existing clubs in Porto Alegre but were rejected because they were newcomers to the area. They deliberately formed a club with no discrimination based on race, religion or class - a rarity at the time.
