The club was founded in 1896 as "Der Hannoversche Fußballclub v.1896 (HFC)". In 1913 the HFC, and the "Ballverein Hannovera von 1898" merged and became "Hannoversche Sportverein von 1896 e.V". The official club colors are black, white and green but their uniforms are red and black. Won the German Cup as a second division team, the only time that has ever happened.
