In 1977 the football section of all-sports club Skry Bełchatów (under the ownership of Elektrownia Bełchatów) was transferred to a miners group called Węgiel Brunatny and re-launched as a new club - Górniczy Klub Sportowy Węgiel Brunatny Bełchatów. Six years later the name was simplified to GKS Bełchatów - Bełchatów Miners' Sports Club.

The nickname Górnicy means Miners. GieKSa is just a way of saying out (instead of spelling) the acronym GKS.
