Formed on June 3, 1887. Translation: The Club of Gymnastics and Fencing of La Plata. Formed by a group of La Plata elites in 1887, to practice these two sports, which were considered the sports of the elite in Argentina. The club adopted football in 1901. Merged with Club Independencia in 1914. The Lobo nickname was given by a local newspaper cartoonist in the 1950s, who created a cartoon image of the team and associating it with the area around the stadium - El Bosque (The Woods). The club's official motto is the Latin phrase - Mens sana in corpore sano, which means healthy mind in a healthy body. The club as a whole is the oldest in Argentina, although its football section is not. Traditionally supported by the working-class of La Plata, while its rival Estudiantes has a more middle-class fan base. Los Triperos is a reference to many supporters who once worked in the meat-processing plants of nearby Berisso.
