Founded by English immigrants on September 7, 1893, with no Italians admitted until 1897.  Genoa are the oldest existing club in Italy. The club was originally formed to play cricket, the soccer section did not start until 1896. Grifoni nickname is a reference to the Griffon found on the club's emblem. Luigi Ferraris was an early player of the club. 1929-45 name change to Genova was a change forced upon the club by the Fascist government of the time, who disapproved of 'foreign' names.
