Founded on July 28, 1904 by workers of the Ferrocarril Oeste railway line. Matches with arch-rival Vélez Sársfield are called El Clásico del Oeste. Oeste means West, with the club based in the western part of Buenos Aires, specifically the Caballito neighborhood. The stadium is named for a former club president. Verdolaga is a salad green popular in many parts of Latin America. Its use as a nickname is a reference to the club's green color.
