Official Website: dcunited.com Description: DC = the District of Columbia, the region in which Washington, the US capital is located. A number of names were suggested at the time of the club's creation (including the nightmarish Washington Spies) but the very traditional-sounding United was eventually settled on. Beyond its traditional name, it could be said that United symbolizes the uniting of the three components of the Washington region - DC and the states of Maryland and Virginia. The club's emblem features an eagle (a traditional symbol of the United States, befitting a club in the nation's capital) and a star around a soccer ball, the star meant to honor the club's title in the inaugural campaign of MLS. The stadium is named for Robert F. Kennedy and was the long-time home of the NFL Washington Redskins until their move to a suburban stadium in the mid-1990s. It was also home to the baseball Washington Nationals until they moved to their own stadium for the 2008 season. The club has been in ongoing negotiations over the last several years with DC and (recently) Maryland regarding construction of a new stadium. 2006 Home Uniform | 2006 Away Uniform | Trophy Room: * MLS Cup (1996, 97, 99, 2004) * US Open Cup (1996) * Supporters Shield (1997, 99, 2006, 07) * CONCACAF Champions Cup (1998) * Copa Interamericana (1998) League History: 1996-2008 Major League Soccer (1st Level)
