Consadole Sapporo were founded in 1995 after the Toshiba Soccer Club franchise was moved from its previous home in Kawasaki. The ownership at the time was also transferred from the Toshiba corporation to the newly-formed Hokkaido Football Club in Sapporo on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The earlier incarnation, Toshiba Soccer Club, had played for many years in the Japanese Soccer League, the forerunner of the J.League. The name Consadole is a combination of Consado (a play on the Japanese word Dosanko - resident of Hokkaido) and Olé. Consadole Sapporo have the unhappy distinction of being the first team relegated in Japan, going down from the J.League to the newly-created J2 at its creation.
