They were virtually destroyed by World War II but the remants restarted and merged to form a new club called Calcio Club Catania. The Elefanti nickname is an homage to the elephant in the club's emblem. The animal is a symbol of the city. The Etnei nickname is a reference to Catania's proximity to Mt. Etna. Catania’s red and blue colors are those of the city of Catania, which pay homage to the fire of Mt. Etna and the blue of the sky.The stadium's official name is that of a long-time club president. It is commonly known as Cibali, the neighborhood in which it is located.
