A number of Jewish players were imprisoned or executed during the Nazi era of the late 30s and 40s. The most famous of these was club legend Matthias Sindelar, who died in mysterious circumstances in 1939. It is regarded as a badge of pride that the club kept the name 'Austria' during this time despite attempts by the Nazi authorities to change it. Merged with WAC (Wiener Athletiksport-Club) for four seasons in the 70s before the merger was dissolved. Known as Austria Memphis for a time, due to its sponsorship by the tobacco company Memphis. Reached the European Cup Winners Cup final in 1978 and the European Cup semifinals in 1979, thus far the club's high point in international competition.
