Formed as a merger of Récord and Colón on October 12th, 1916 and named América in honor of Columbus Day (October 12th). In its early seasons, América were the only club to field an all-Mexican team. The majority of teams at that time were formed by foreign nationals and fielded almost exclusively foreign players. Purchased by the Mexican television giant Televisa in 1959, the point at which América's professional success began. One of the two most popular teams in Mexico, along with arch-rivals Chivas. The Canarios nickname comes from their yellow jerseys.
